In recent years, historic villages and towns have faced increasing threats due to unprofessional restoration works, endangering the preservation of these valuable cultural treasures. This study examines the challenges and issues surrounding the protection of historical villages and towns, using the ancient city wall of Datong in China and the ancient village of Xidi in Huizhou as illustrative examples. Through a comprehensive analysis of the current damage and deterioration of these cultural sites, this research underscores the pressing need for effective protection measures. Furthermore, this study advocates for a solution that promotes the organic integration of sustainable development principles with cultural heritage preservation efforts. By conducting in-depth research and analysis, this paper aims to raise awareness and mobilize collective actions to safeguard historic villages and towns. It emphasizes the importance of preserving these unique cultural legacies and the invaluable historical and cultural wisdom they embody
