HEPATITIS B KNOWLEDGE AMONG MEDICAL LABORATORY PROFESSIONALS: A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY

Abstract

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major global health concern, particularly prevalent in developing countries. This necro-inflammatory liver disease can lead to severe health complications, including liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV is highly contagious and can be transmitted through various means, making healthcare workers (HCWs) particularly vulnerable to infection due to their occupational exposure to blood and body fluids. Millions of HCWs worldwide face the risk of needlestick injuries and puncture wounds, and a significant number of these incidents go unreported. This places HCWs at a four-fold higher risk of HBV infection compared to non-healthcare workers. To mitigate this occupational hazard, it is crucial to promote hepatitis B vaccination among healthcare professionals and implement strict safety measures in healthcare settings to prevent needlestick injuries and reduce the risk of transmission. In this context, this study aims to highlight the critical need for increased awareness, prevention, and vaccination programs to protect HCWs from HBV infection and contribute to global efforts in controlling this significant public health issue.
