This article delves into the intricate dynamics of the South Africa-China relationship during Jacob Zuma's administration from 2013 to 2017, scrutinizing its mutual benefit through an Afrocentric lens. Employing a desktop qualitative research approach rooted in secondary data analysis, the study challenges the conventional Eurocentric perspective, asserting the significance of examining African phenomena from within the African context. Key thematic areas such as cultural exchange, financial trade, wildlife conservation, and tourism form the focal points of analysis. The research unfolds South Africa's strategic shift towards the East during this period, shaping alterations in foreign policy with a pronounced emphasis on "realpolitik" rather than human rights considerations. Despite this shift, the study discerns a mutually beneficial relationship between South Africa and China, marked by signed agreements spanning mining, energy, environment, and transport. The article underscores the imperative of viewing this partnership through an Afrocentric lens to truly understand its nuances and implications. While advocating for the strengthening of bilateral relations to navigate potential challenges and optimize mutual gains, the article remains attuned to critical concerns. These include the risk of South Africa's de-industrialization due to Chinese influence, the impact of Chinese policies on indigenous languages and cultures, the use of South Africa as a testing ground for alternative Chinese policies, and the threat posed to South African tourism and local identities by Chinese nationals engaging in poaching activities. In conclusion, the article recognizes the complexity of the South Africa-China relationship, urging for a nuanced understanding that transcends conventional perspectives. The findings underscore the necessity of balancing the benefits of cooperation with vigilance against potential negative consequences. The article concludes with a call for sustained efforts to fortify bilateral relations and address identified concerns, thereby fostering a more equitable and enduring partnership.
