ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI, based on the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) architecture, designed to generate human-like text based on user prompts. It was trained using vast datasets encompassing diverse topics, allowing it to engage in natural language conversations, provide detailed information, and assist with a wide array of tasks such as answering questions, generating text, summarizing content, and more. The study adopted descriptive survey research design to investigate the attitude of undergraduate students' use of ChatGPT for academic work: Attitude and challenges. The study was carried out at the University of Port Harcourt and Rivers State University. The population of the study was 262 year 3 students from the University of Port Harcourt and 164 year 3 students from Rivers State University. A sample size of 140 students was used for the study. Structured questionnaire titled attitude of undergraduate students' use of ChatGPT for academic work: Attitude and challenges (AUSCAWAC) with 25 items was used for the study to collect data. Face and content validity was used for the study. Reliability coefficient of 0.72 was obtained. Mean and z-test were the statistical tools used for the study. The study found that many students appreciate ChatGPT for its ability to provide quick explanations, summarize complex topics, and assist with research and writing. Furthermore, it was found that many students view ChatGPT as a tool for breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms; it can help clarify difficult topics, explain theories, and answer questions in a way that aids their understanding, functioning almost like a personal tutor available 24/7. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended that academic institutions should develop comprehensive policies outlining the acceptable use of AI tools like ChatGPT in academic work
